Baby Steps: A Grueling, Hilarious, and Thought-Provoking Journey

In a world where video games are often defined by dizzying speeds, massive explosions, and epic battles, Baby Steps dares to turn the simplest human act into the ultimate challenge: taking a step. This game, developed by Gabe Cuzzillo, Maxi Boch, and Bennett Foddy (the legendary creator of QWOP and Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy), is not only a walking simulator, but a bold satire on modern life, laziness, and the search for meaning amid constant failures.

Game Introduction: From Parents' Basement to Misty Peaks
Baby Steps was released on September 23, 2025, by Devolver Digital for PC (Steam) and PlayStation 5. You play as  Nate,  a 35 year old unemployed, reclusive  failson  living in his parents' basement who is suddenly after a power outage thrown into a misty, mountainous world. The goal? To climb to a distant peak on the horizon, using the power he just discovered: putting one foot in front of the other.
This open world like environment, inspired by real hiking trails like Old Rag Mountain, is filled with diverse biomes (from misty plains to snowy cliffs). With no map, no waypoints, and no fast travel, the only guides are the glowing camps. The story progresses through long, improvised, and absurd cutscenes packed with characters like talking donkeys and hiking guides that Nate rejects due to his social anxiety. The total length of the cutscenes equals a feature length film, but skipping them reveals a dark secret: a 28 minute punishment!
The game costs about $20 and requires at least 19 GB of space (with minimum specs of Intel Core i7-7700K and GTX 1650 for 60 FPS at 1080p).

Technical Mechanics: Pure Physics and Locomotion Challenge
At the heart of Baby Steps, there is a fully simulated physics system (ragdoll physics) that turns every step into a complex equation. The controls are intentionally clumsy:
+--------------------+---------------------------------------------------+
| Control            | Function                                          |
+--------------------+---------------------------------------------------+
| LT (Left Trigger)  | Lifting the left foot and placing it in the      |
|                    | desired location (using the joystick)            |
+--------------------+---------------------------------------------------+
| RT (Right Trigger) | Lifting the right foot                            |
+--------------------+---------------------------------------------------+
| Left Joystick      | Rotating the camera and body                      |
+--------------------+---------------------------------------------------+
| Buttons            | Limited interaction (collecting fruit, hat)      |
+--------------------+---------------------------------------------------+
Balance is calculated based on the weight distribution of the feet: if one foot is lifted too high, Nate falls and must repeat the section from the checkpoint. The unique  onesie soilage  system soils Nate's clothes with mud and dirt  visually funny and indicative of progress. The world is horizontally wrapping (edges are connected), and to complete it, approximately 70,000 steps (35,000 per leg, 25 hours of gameplay) are required.Challenges are optional: direct climbing of rocks, collecting collectibles, or completing with fewer than 10,000 steps for an achievement. Dynamic music with footstep sound effects and background music increases immersion, but is sometimes overwhelming. There are no QoL features like quick save  intentional to emphasize struggle as insight.

Review: Love and Hate in One Package

Baby Steps has a dual reception: Critics are mostly positive (Metacritic 77/100, 65% positive), but users are mixed (5.5/10, Steam 91% Very Positive from 1,072 reviews).
Strengths:
  • Absurd humor and deep satire: Cutscenes are the funniest of 2025, a dissection of modern society (Polygon). Nate is the symbol of the "man-child."
  • Addictive challenge: "brutal, unbelievably stupid, and downright awesome" (IGN 9/10). Learning the mechanics is satisfying, like indie-style Death Stranding.
  • Vast and curiosity-driven world: Hours of exploration, weird fauna, beautiful biomes.
Weaknesses:
  • Severe frustration: Frequent falls, graphical pop-in, camera issues (GamesRadar 4/5).
  • Long and punishing: No QoL features, suitable for streamers not everyone (Game Informer).
  • Mixed graphics: Sometimes ugly, overwhelming music (TheGamer 4.5/5).
In the end, Baby Steps is a masterpiece for Foddy fans (QWOP-lovers) – a crucible for the mind that turns frustration into insight. If you have patience, buy it; otherwise, watch from afar. 9/10 for those who love baby steps.
