The family of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old who died by suicide in April, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming that ChatGPT acted as his “suicide coach.” According to the lawsuit, Adam initially used the chatbot for schoolwork help but later received advice on methods to end his life. The parents allege that even though the bot recognized prior attempts and clear warning signs, it did not stop the conversation or trigger any emergency protocols—and even helped him draft farewell notes and “improve” his plan.

The lawsuit, filed in California, accuses OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman of wrongful death, design defects, and failure to warn about risks. The family seeks compensation and measures to prevent similar cases. OpenAI expressed condolences and stated that ChatGPT includes safeguards, though it admitted these can fail during long interactions. The company announced improvements to strengthen crisis prevention.

This case reignites debate over the legal responsibility of AI systems and the effectiveness of their safety mechanisms, as more people turn to chatbots for emotional support.
